Hearts and Sharts

A Little Cute, A Little Unexpected

Yo. I’m Dena.

I love to laugh and I love to make things.

profile image cirlcE FIELDI love the smell of bleach, I could eat only sandwiches for the rest of my life and I have been involved in an emotionally abusive relationship with the Dallas Cowboys for over twenty years.   I enjoy rare steak, Redbreast, ranch style beans, pork rinds, anything chartreuse and organizing things.  I drink vinegar.  I think farting is funny.

When I was little, all I wanted to do was draw. In the late 80’s, 8-year-old-Dena was told that, in order to be a successful illustrator, one would have to come up with something “as brilliant as Garfield or Peanuts” – and even then, there was no money in it, so don’t bother. Dreams squashed, I continued doodling for fun, took some drawing courses in college (which were basically the only classes I attended), dropped out and ended up “workin’ for the man” for the next decade or so. After a series of very major life events in a very short period of time, I realized that life is too short to hate your job. With the support of my husband, I quit working and started down a creative journey that gave birth to Hearts and Sharts.

The name was born after a few glasses os whiskey and some giggles over the phrase “arts and farts”. I put my own spin on it with a name that covers everything from cute and colorful to snarky and irreverent.  This all became the perfect foundation for the Hearts and Sharts tagline “a little cute, a little unexpected.”

Hearts and Sharts has had many iterations since it began in 2012. I started out selling handmade girls dresses, baby onesies, and custom pet pillows on Etsy. In 2014 Hearts and Sharts became a DIY blog as well as furniture refinishing business. I started doodling and drawing again in 2016 and realized that my 8-year-old-self had it right all along. The best and most recent iteration is Hearts and Sharts as a greeting card and gift line, born in early 2018.

Sharing an old drawing today that I never did anyt Sharing an old drawing today that I never did anything with - "you can't unring a bell" - this is something my mom used to say to me all the time. Today marks the 9th anniversary of her car accident - that's painful in itself but we didn't have the best relationship so I feel like that stings a little extra. Mom was going out with friends to commemorate the one-year anniversary of her father's passing. She had recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor but was finally feeling well enough to go out and have drinks with friends. She drank too much, I assume to drown the pain of missing her dad or celebrate his life... The server cut her off but then she headed to the bar, tipping over a table on the way, causing everyone in the bar to look, including the bartender, who then served her anyway. She drove, no one objected - she hit a concrete pillar head-on at 40 mph and her airbag did not deploy. She died on the scene. You can't unring a bell - you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, you can't undo some shit that you did - but you also can't undo some shit that you *DIDN'T* do. Like in 2008 when I got a DUI and hid it from my mother. It was an 18-month situation that I kept from her. What if I had told her? I remember how emotional that time was for me, imagining that I could have hurt or killed someone. What if I had allowed her to go through all that with me? Would she have thought twice about getting in the car that night? ... I DO hope that sharing this story with you will make you think twice about your actions - not just drinking (with rideshares these days, you have zero excuses, please don't drink and drive) but all your actions, the way we speak to others, from besties to strangers. Noting this again for myself. You can't unring a bell.

Summa y'all really think I put a dang CONDOM in yo Summa y'all really think I put a dang CONDOM in your order - I giggle every time I hear that. It's a SHART WIPE, guys! 😂
.
Full disclosure - they're actually clean catch urine wipes which means that they're "undercarriage safe" - I dunno if you've ever tried to use a Hooters hand wipe on your downstairs but yikes, the alcohol burns. These don't, so they're like, real, actual if-you-shart-you-can-wipe-it-with-this-and-it-wont-burn kinda wipes. Not condoms. Ya welc.

March 1931, a white boy gets off a train in Scotts March 1931, a white boy gets off a train in Scottsboro, Alabama with a bloody head, said there’d been a fight between black and white boys on the train. A posse forms to go snatch up these boys at the next train station. At the next stop, nine Black boys, vagabonds ranging in age from 13 to 20, were found in a freight car and arrested. And oop, two white ladies pop out. These two look around, see the cops, see the posse and decide to claim they’ve been raped. Again, we’re in Alabama so the townsfolk have their pitchforks, urging that the boys be released so they can inflict “southern justice” on these “savages”. These boys had no money for a defense and had a court appointed jackoff who did little to help them and of course the jury was all white. All but one were sentenced to death. Several groups acted quickly to come to the boys rescue and one of them was the ILD, the International Labor Defense aka the legal team for the Communist Party. The NAACP was hesitant and did not act right away for fear of negative association to possible rapists, the ILD however, saw this as an opportunity to lure African Americans to the Communist Party. So the Communists were saying these boys were workers and like, “THIS is the terrible shit that happens to workers in a capitalist system”, trying to make it about economics when it’s about race. So the NAACP gets involved, they thought the boys being associated with the Communists may end up being a literal death sentence, especially in the South. The original convictions are overturned based on the aforementioned jackoff attorney. THEN white girl from the train writes a letter stating that she was never raped (!!) This new evidence was presented at the next trial but the other girl stuck to her story and the boys were convicted again. The ILD and NAACP joined forces to try to save these boys - some were released within a few years of the incident but the last was released in 1950.19fuckingFIFTY. These cases went on for a few years and the Scottsboro boys became the topic of rallies all over the US. This was the start of a new era for Black Americans, these weren’t silent marches, these were political rallies
