Hey guys! So, yeah, it’s been two years since I last posted but this year has been a little bit of a shitstorm so I started decorating for Christmas in September. Yes, I said September. Colon Cancer took my Dad in July and I’ll admit I was pretty much drunk from July to the end of October. Somewhere in the middle there, around September, I thought “eff this quarantine, eff
DIY Folding Check-Out Stand
Hey guys! I recently built some new craft displays that I am completely in love with – one of them is this folding check-out stand. I took some snaps and IG stories and mashed them all into a quick video to give you the low down on how I built it. I’m not gonna go through a bunch of instructions here, I put most of them in the video, so
DIY Mid-Century Modern Media Console [VIDEO]
Hiiieeeee! It’s been a minute since I shared a DIY post – like, a real long minute. But Hubs and I built this mid-century modern media console last fall and I’m still super proud of it and wanted to share it with y’all. Ignore that ugly TV cord – I haven’t gotten to that yet. Gimme a year or so. Last year when we lived in Georgia, Hubs and I
Twenty-GREAT-teen
Hey. It’s been a minute since I’ve posted, we’ve been through lots of changes over here. My husband and I moved back to Texas from Atlanta right after I did Indie Craft Experience last summer. He stayed in ATL to work and I stayed with family in Texas while looking for our new home. I knew I had some sort of vitamin D deficiency from basically living in a forest
Indie Craft Experience – Summer I.C.E.
Hee-eeeey. So, I’ve basically quit blogging but somehow people are still subscribing – which is good but my direction has changed a bit from the DIY scene. I’ve been drawing, turning my drawings into repeat patterns, having them printed on fabric, and then sewing them up into tea towels and travel bags. The etsy shop hasn’t been great so far, but I haven’t put as much work into it as
National DIY Day || Shirt Illustration for the Craft Box Girls
Hey y’all! I’m excited to share with you guys an illustration I did for the Craft Box Girls. I submitted an application about a month ago and they selected me as one of their official shirt designers for National DIY Day. AND!! I have a coupon code for you to get the shirt! National DIY Day is April 2nd and is a movement to celebrate creativity and the art of making. The movement supports AdoptAClassroom.org

Shop Updates + GIVEAWAY
You guys. It’s been too long. Well, I guess I don’t really feel that way, I honestly hate blogging. I love the projects and I love sharing them and communicating with all you guys but… taking the pics, writing the post, pinning the stuff, promoting on social media… it’s all way to much for me. It just steals the joy away from the creative process. And I’m not in this
MCM Inspired Ikea Maskros Hack
When I shared our dining room makeover and I told you I would share the DIY deets for the light really soon. But then I got some new pens, a doodle book, and developed an obsession with Illustrator, and here we are, weeks later. Whatever, this IKEA Maskros hack is already all over the internet and now my little obsession is gonna get you some more free prints (coming soon
Shart Stories – Episode 2
The last shart story was almost two years ago so I am so excited to present to you… NUMBER TWO. That’s right, Shart Stories Episode 2 is here and, you guys, this is hilarious. This was submitted anonymously. Ready for some serious giggles? Here ya go. So here’s the deal, it’s brief. I was maybe 12 or 13 years old, in high school and getting changed for P.E. We always used
Colorful Eclectic Modern Dining Room
I have another room makeover for ya. It might seem like I’m making over every room in the house; I’m not. My OCD won’t let me share something that isn’t “done” – and when is a room truly done? Never. So, like the master bedroom, the dining room has been making a slow transformation from inherited-from-mom to colorful eclectic modern since last December. Like, literally the day after the magazine
DIY Graffiti Inspired Art
Do you remember when Pinterest was invite only? Seems like forever ago… which is also about when “paint chip art” became a huge thing. And, of course I made one. It’s been sitting in the basement for three years now and, since I needed some large scale art for the dining room, I decided I would paint over the paint chips. I thought that a coat of high gloss white
Evolution of a Master Bedroom || Thrifted-Eclectic
Going through photos of our master bedroom to find examples of this… uh, evolution… has been hilarious. Not like laugh-until-I-cry hilarious but more like a why-did-I-wear-seven-scrunchies-in-my-hair-on-picture-day kinda hilarious. Hilariously embarrassing. Which is always funny. Spoiler alert – this is the “after” photo. I have to show this first so I can make excuses about all the embarrassing pics to come. So bad. Here we go, the evolution of a master
DIY Deck Lighting
When I shared our vintage guest bedroom, I think I said I would share the other guest room that recently got a “shop-your-house” makeover. The pics didn’t turn out so great, so I retook them. Once again they came out lookin’ not so great. So, I just had to come to the realization that maybe the whole bedroom is just not as cute as I thought. Which is fine because
Faux Tarnished Brass Finish
Back in March I shared a Dwell with Dignity makeover sponsored by Codarus and mentioned a faux tarnished brass finish that I did on one of the dressers. It’s so easy and pretty cheap. I’ve got a quick video and some deets on that project today along with this plastic thrift store gator that got the same faux finish. Here’s where the dresser started: Cody wanted it painted baby pink with brass details
[Another] Vintage Bedroom Makeover
Are you ready for a vintage guest room makeover?! So, I wasn’t going to share this, because it’s really not a makeover, but then I went back and looked at the before images and thought, “honkin’ crap, Dena, what were you thinking that first time around?!” So I thought I’d bring it to the blog to 1) have my “what the funk” moment in public so we can laugh and, 2)
[VIDEO] Easy DIY Mother’s Day Mug
I feel so on top of my game right now. I’m sure it won’t last long but this is this first time ever in the history of shartland that I have a gift idea for a holiday that hasn’t already passed. What?! Mother’s Day is fast approaching and for those of you looking for an easy DIY gift idea for Mom, here ya go, a DIY Mother’s Day Mug. My
Vintage + Retro Kitchen
I’ve shared our kitchen before so this is more of an evolution than a makeover. But since it’s been in a magazine (Is she still talking about that?! Yes. Yes, I am.) and I’ve made a few changes, I thought I’d share the full evolution and what it looks like today. In real life. When we moved in: The old island actually ended up becoming an industrial coffee table and
Copper + Wood Drink Caddy
Hey-eeyyyy! #SwapItLikeItsHot week is officially over but I have one more project to share from the goodies I got from Karen at Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza. Last time I shared this bouquet holder that I made from an ugly tea light thing: And this time I’m workin’ with the little wooden crate: This is one of my new favorite things ever because, full disclosure, my husband actually made it. I’ve
Swap It Like It’s HOT!
It’s here! One of my favorite events… Today is the kick off for a week of amazing thrift store transformations. A bunch of thrift lovers got together (thanks to Charlotte at Ciburbanity), exchanged addresses and mailed each totally rando items to reinvent and re-imagine. I got my goods from Karen at Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza. She actually lives within driving distance, so I think I got some bonus items since
Rustic Mid-Century Living Room Makeover
Oh my gosh, you guys. So much has happened that I haven’t shared and I am so excited to finally be sharing all the projects I’ve been working on for the last 7 months. Yes, seven months! Early last year, I started working on a living room makeover (which I talked about here) and I finally finished it up at the end of last summer. So, why haven’t I shared? I had
A Codarus Makeover for Dwell with Dignity Atlanta
Whoohoo! Another Dwell with Dignity makeover! This one was easy, breezy (for me, anyway) thanks to the sweet peeps at Codarus, their adorably handsome founder Cody, as well as VP of showroom operations Katrena. Cody and Katrena killed it (which is not surprising if you’ve seen the Codarus showroom here in ATL), but I’ll let the before and after pics do the talking on that one. If you’re new around here, Dwell
How to Fake Hand Lettering
This is one of the easiest and most gratifying DIY’s ever. It’s cheap, it’s easy and best of all, it’s totally trendy right now. So, ya know all those hand lettered signs you’ve been coveting on Insta and Etsy? Now you can make your own even if your cursive looks like chicken scratch. Fake hand lettering… ready? Start with a piece of art, a piece of wood, a thrifted globe,
[VIDEO] Easy DIY Abstract Art
Up until just about a month ago, almost this entire gallery wall was full of frames. Only frames. Since I was planning this gallery wall around frames I already had, it was much easier to throw them up on the wall and leave them blank until I found (or made) the perfect piece of art to fit the frame. I knew I wanted the centerpiece of the gallery wall to
Knock Off Train Depot Sign
I have a wall in my craft room where I tape up pics torn out of magazines. I’ve had a picture of a vintage train depot sign taped up on the wall forever and finally got around to making it. I am just smitten with it. It’s super cute and it was super free. At some point when I was single, I decided that I didn’t need a TV in
Haters Gonna Hate || Updated
If you spend any amount of time on the internet, you know that internet trolls exist. I have no idea what kind of pleasure they get from insulting or belittling people while hiding behind their computer screen, but the fact is, they’re out there. And they’re jerks. But that’s just who they are, and the only real thing we can do to fight them is to love them. And, y’all, that
Campaign Dresser Makeover | A Furniture Nightmare
It’s been weeks since I’ve even logged into the blog and for some reason I feel like I should apologize. I’m not going to, though, because I really enjoyed it. It’s also been weeks since I’ve painted any furniture. More than weeks, more like a few months. Again, totally cool with this because I freeze when the temps drop below 65 degrees. It’s science. Have you seen the “rent is
Free Christmas Printable || Luke 2
Okay, last free printable of the year. This one is my fav, hope you love it as much as I do! This free Christmas printable is from Luke 2:14. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.” This will print on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper but is formatted to fit nicely in an 8 x 10 frame. Thrift Score Thursday
I’ve been on a thrifting hiatus lately because… money. And also space. But I hit a flea market this past weekend just in time to guest host Thrift Score Thursday this week and I’m pretty much drooling over everything in the #thriftscorethursday feed. I keep getting distracted by Craigslist trying to find the same goods here in ATL. This past weekend, Hubs and I drove out Dawsonville after seeing an
Signs From Above
Hi. So, yeah, another personal post. The last one felt a little weird to write but once I got it out there, not so weird. Did that last post open the flood gates? I dunno, maybe. Maybe it’s just too dang cold to paint furniture and it’s making me warm and feely inside. I do know that a lot of crazy things have happened in my life in the last
Free Christmas Printable || Isaiah 9:6
You might have noticed a few free printables on the blog lately. Well, I hope you like that kind of thing because, y’all, it’s already too cold outside for me and staying inside making free printables keeps me warm. Ready for a free Christmas printable?! Here ya go! “And his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6 As usual, this will
[VIDEO] Watercolor Inspired Mug || No Nail Polish
Oh my goodness, you guys. This tutorial has been on my to do list since last fall. Finally got ‘er done and in video form, no less! Whoohoo! So, I bet you’ve seen these watercolor inspired mugs hanging out on Pinterest and the interwebs but they are all made out of nail polish. Nail polish is toxic (only about as toxic as sticking your fingernail in your mouth… but still),
Feeling the Feels
Getting personal on the blog is not something I’m in the habit of doing. I don’t tend to get to personal in real life, either. I’ve shared a couple personal posts with you guys; one of them was my testimony and the other one I’m not going to link here because so many people unsubscribed right after it went out. Most of the readers that swing through here are simply looking
Free Thanksgiving Printable || Psalm 91
Hi. I made a free printable to share with you. It’s perfect for year round display, ’cause, ya know, God’s got your back. It’s also Thanksgiving colors and would make a great addition to a gallery wall or front entry way for your holiday entertaining. I love this verse. It just makes me feel warm and cozy and so super loved. Hope it makes you feel the same. “He shall
Retro Dinette Set || Painting Vinyl Upholstery
Last week I shared one of my favorite thrift store finds, a vintage retro dinette set, and a crazy-awesome-cheap-and-easy fix for removing rust from chrome … …and I gave you a little peek at the seriously shart stained chairs that came with it. Take a closer look. I’ll give ya a dollar if you lick it. The vinyl upholstery was in good shape, not counting the grime, so I figured with
Retro Dinette Set || Removing Rust from Chrome
Over a year ago, I took a quick weekend trip up to Nashville to help a friend get unpacked. On my way back home I spotted a retro dinette set on the side of the road and dang near wrecked my car making a u-turn. I was certain that something so awesome would cost more than I wanted to spend but ran inside to ask the price anyway. I had a
Free Watercolor Printable
Hey friends! I made a few watercolor inspired free printables to share with you for Thanksgiving. There are several different colors and, since this is a bible verse, it’s great for year round display, not just Thanksgiving. “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 I also included a solid black version just in case watercolor isn’t cool any more. I mean, I still love
Dwell with Dignity – September Install
If you’ve been following along for the past year or so, surely you’ve heard me mention Dwell with Dignity. If not, here’s the break down: Dwell With Dignity is a Dallas-based non-profit dedicated to helping families escape poverty and homelessness through design, one household at a time. With the help of some dedicated volunteers, we now have a provisional chapter here in Atlanta. Do you remember having play dates at
Transforming Thrift Store Finds
A couple months ago I went back to Texas to visit family and did some digging around in an old house that is on their property. It was actually my great grandparents home but has become a kind of storage unit. If you need me, I’ll be in here. #pickin #fridayfunday #HeartsAndSharts A photo posted by Dena (Holley) Stormer (@heartsandsharts) on Jul 24, 2015 at 5:52am PDT There are so
Whiskey Barrel-Top End Tables
I got another custom order from the sweet girls at GordonDunning. I gotta admit I was a little bit panicked about this one, but it ended up being so easy. The order was to use their client’s wedding guest book, two whiskey barrel tops, and turn them into end tables. (Last names were quickly Photoshopped out of these images, please excuse.) Cate and Lathem like to tell to their client’s story through
Prep and Painting Process
Hey ya’ll! If you follow this blog regularly, you know how often I talk about all the projects that I haven’t shared. When posting before and after images of painted furniture projects, it seems a little rude to just post the images and not share the process, which I admit I’ve totally done out of laziness. This is a DIY blog and it only makes sense to post the process
Vintage Rustic Wedding
Hubs and I celebrated our third anniversary last week and after going through the photos and reliving that amazing day, I remembered that crazy hectic time and allllllll the DIY projects I did. Since this is a place for DIY, I thought I’d share. Before I go sharing all this, I need you to understand a couple things; this was threeeee years ago, I was not blogging then and was so deep into
Vintage Media Console Update
Hi. Back in March, GordonDunning dropped off this vintage mid-century media console: It’s a gorgeous mahogany RCA Victrola media console. (We have a similar looking Columbia in our front room, minus the TV. I’m totally smitten with it.) They wanted the TV guts removed and replaced with a shelf, leaving the record player, stereo and speakers all still connected and painted a high gloss navy (SW Naval). So I nodded
Decoupage || Using Napkins on Wood Furniture
Hi. [Insert rant about how terrible I am at blogging and how long it’s been since I’ve posted]. Okay, so, a few months ago I saw this pin on Pinterest that stopped me in my tracks. This isn’t usually my style, but goodness, it’s gorgeous. So I obviously clicked over to find out how Allison at Refunk My Junk created this beauteous thing. Her post led me over to Sweet
Antique Secretary Makeover
Back in March I got a rush order from GordonDunning to refinish a dining room table, a pair of end tables, and an antique hutch… and by rush order, I mean, like 10 days. Ten days seems like plenty of time but, because I’m me and I don’t know the meaning of balance I went ahead and added a bamboo dresser and another pair of end tables to my schedule
Upholstery Free Chair Makeover
Okay, I know I say this in almost every post, but I have so many projects to share that I just haven’t been able to get to… mostly because there are a thousand other projects on my to do list and I always make those a priority. And now I’m headed out of town for a bit so all those projects are going to have to wait a bit longer because I
Painting a Striped Dresser
This project was done for our most recent Dwell with Dignity install here in Atlanta and was all coordinated by Nandina Home & Design. Today I am just sharing this one piece from the project but if you would like more info on Dwell with Dignity or want to see more projects from previous installations, you can search the blog for “Dwell with Dignity” and they’ll all pop up. If
His & Hers Antique Rockers
I’ve been insanely busy lately. I’m not complaining, I’m so super thankful, but it does make sharing projects on a regular basis extra hard. At least ! have a great backlog of projects to share…? Anyway, I did these for one half of the fabulous GordonDunning duo. The order: Paint chairs in a high gloss appropriate for outdoor use and build up the seat on the “His” chair to match
Vintage Inspired Diner Chalkboard
Last year I shared our kitchen reno in our Georgia home… … and now I’m ready for another makeover. Nothing extreme like the first time but I’m pretty excited about it anyway. In the last few months, I’ve determined that my style is “Rustic MCM”. It’s pretty amazing how putting a label on it makes it easier to decorate, especially in a larger space like our living room. If it can’t
Vintage Hanging Frame
A couple months ago I picked up a giant vintage map of the Pacific Ocean at Scott’s Antique Market for twenty bucks. When I got home, I googled it and found the exact same one for over $300 dollars on Etsy (aaaand that’s exactly how I justify my thrifting addiction to my husband). Anyway, when I went to hang up the map, I noticed that there was another map under
Rustic-Industrial Coffee Table Makeover
About a month ago I shared a lil’ peek at my living room makeover (check out the updated room here), which is currently moving slow as molasses. At the time, we were using a trunk as a coffee table, which functioned just fine, but wasn’t totally my vision for the room. I had been hitting thrift stores, flea markets and making the usual rounds, keeping an eye out for a rustic-industrial coffee
DIY Garage Paint Booth
* Do this at your own risk.* Add this to the list of things I should have done a long time ago. This DIY garage paint booth has changed the way I work and I am totally smitten. I’ve been using a paint sprayer for about a year now. In the past, each time I would start a project, I would spend almost half a day setting up some sort
Bamboo Dresser – Before & After
I have a ton of things I’ve been working and am excited to share but today I just have a quick before and after, because, ya know, it’s easy. When we did our second Dwell with Dignity – Atlanta project, I met two highly caffeinated designers that I kinda fell in love with. These girls. Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning make up the design duo GordonDunning and were super fun to
Repurposing Thrifty Finds
The other day I posted some deets on the Thrifting with Tyler Tour Bus benefiting Dwell with Dignity and said I was going to share some of my finds from the day. I mainly wanted to share some amazing minty green lunch trays I found and some ideas on how to repurpose them. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have already seen this pic: I picked up four lunch trays,
Thrifting with Tyler
If you weren’t one of the lucky 50 people on the Thrift with Tyler tour bus on May 2nd, then, dude, you missed out. This was the second year of the thrifty tour and after missing it the first year, I was NOT going to miss it again. The Thrift with Tyler Tour Bus benefits Dwell with Dignity and if you haven’t heard of DwD, let me break it down
Diamond Tufted Air Force Footstool
This project has been on my to do list forever and I finally got around to doing it…. and blogging about it. The whole thing cost me less than 8 bucks and was my first attempt at diamond tufting. I was also able to use the replacement buttons from my Grandfather’s Air Force uniform and they made this little stool super special. I started with this: I picked up both the footstool and the
Living Room Update
|| This is a sponsored post written on behalf of Sauder. All opinions are my own. || I have never shared our living room on the blog, mainly because I have never “finished” it. Here’s what it looked like when we moved in: We did quite a bit of work on the house prior to moving in; this room got a full paint, new floors, ceiling fan, and new mantel. Since
Danish Chair Makeover
A few months ago I spotted a pair of chairs hiding underneath a rug at Scott’s Antique Market. These little babes are what Cher Horowitz would refer to as a “full-on Monet”; from far away they look okay, but up close they’re a big ol’ mess. I heard my husband’s voice in my head, “We don’t need any more chairs and you don’t need any more projects.” But the vendor’s
Using Cardboard Upholstery Strips
If you haven’t noticed, it takes me about a thousand years to 1) get around to doing a project and 2) getting around the sharing it on the blog. I picked up this mid-century Gangso Mobler set last June. That’s right, June. Well, whatever. It’s been done since February and is now in the shop up at Woodstock so I thought I would share a quick tip on using cardboard upholstery strips. I
The Shop at Woodstock Market
Ooohwhee, y’all. The last few weeks have been a little hectic. I’ve been trying to get all my schtuff together to put in my new booth at Woodstock Market. They just added a bunch of new booths and have them leased up with some fabulous new vendors. I am so excited about this new adventure and just wanted to share some of the deets with you in case you might

Hey Sharty! I’m over at Real Housemom’s today sharing some quick inspiration for reviving thrifted artwork. Check it!
Be Odd – Free Printable
I’ve been playing around a bit in the craft room getting ready to open my space at Woodstock Market next month and took a little break to make a free printable for all my sharties out there lettin’ their freak flag fly (and to inspire those who are flyin’ it at half mast). I saw this quote pop up in my instagram feed and, even though my grandmother was completely obsessed with
BIG NEWS! (okay, medium news)
So, it’s not GIANT news, but it’s big for me. Last time I posted, I went on a tiny rant about blogging and how I’m kinda drifting away from it and how I would much rather do what I love (which I strongly encourage you to do as well) and get away from the internet. I got a lot of love from friends and family about that decision which was very encouraging.
Happy Sharty Birthday
One year. I’ve been blogging for one whole year. And ya know what? I’m not a huge fan. But let me back up a little bit…. This is what “blogland” calls a “bloggerversary”. Ugh, both of those words make me cringe. Hearts and Sharts started as photo album on my personal Facebook page called “Hey, I made this!” I was making stuff, redoing furniture and gifting it or selling it and
Handmade Gifts: Pom Pens
Love super cute pens? Love super cute pens that are super cheap that you can make yourself and give as gifts?! Meeee toooo! Handmade Pom Pens! I gotta stop right here and give some credit to my friend Crystal who showed me how to make these lil cuties back in the ’90’s. (What?!) These things are so easy and so super cute and dudes.. they are super frugal. First thing’s first,
Welcome to the Season!
I’ve never been real big on holiday decorating, but since Hubs and I have decided to stay put for the holidays we can actually enjoy all of the Christmas decor we’ve inherited over the years, so now every room in the house looks like Santa ran up in this mug and rubbed his beard all over everything. So, when my sweet friend Bee from Windgate Lane said she wanted to put
DIY Painted Wood Headboard
I’ve had several DIY headboards in the last 12 months. Well, actually only three, which, according to my husband, is too many. But this is the first one I am sharing since I hated the other two. I’ll share the crappy ones some day so you can point and laugh, but today I’m gonna share the one I love. It was so super easy, too. The whole project ended up being $99

Give Thanks Thanksgiving Centerpiece
I’m on a thirfty Thanksgiving kick and feeling extra generous this month. So, if you’re a Silhouette addict, I have a gift for you! I made this little “Give Thanks” Thanksgiving centerpiece thingie and wanted to share the print and cut file with you. So, the first file is the print and cut file. I used white, 110 lb card stock for mine. You can get that file here. It’s
Gold Apple Place Cards
I’ve never really been a big holiday decorator, but I think there’s something in the air here. I guess since we aren’t traveling this year, I’ve got some extra time to do some holiday spit-shining. In some crazy twist of fate, my best friend’s husband’s job brought them to Georgia from Texas last year as well so they are going to be chillin’ with us for a casual Thanksgiving this
Easy Fringe Pillow
I’m over at Real Housemoms today sharing a super easy pillow project. If you are a newbie at sewing and need a great project to getcha goin’, this Easy Fringe Pillow is perfect. Click here to check out the full tutorial.
Standing Wooden Lamp with Pulley
This was one of the easiest projects ever. I have had a vintage pulley that I’ve been wanting to use as a light fixture but after hanging it from the ceiling in a bedroom, it just looked wrong. I set it aside for a while, along with the orange extension cord and light cage from Home Depot. I wish I could say I thought of this all on my own but
Free Thanksgiving Printable
I totally didn’t have this planned… I’ve been working on some wedding stuff for a friend and got quite a bit of it done today. I was having so much fun that I decided to create a little printable to use on the table at Thanksgiving. So, yeah, it’s not what you’d call “Thanksgiving colors”, but, I plan on doing some decorating with moss and I think the green in
My Current Project To Do List
I’ve had a thousand projects sitting in our basement waiting for new clothes or new paint. I know I need to get all of these projects done before I can go out and buy new junk and I seem to be in that paralyzing space where I have to make decisions on each project. I’m hoping that by sharing my to do list with you, it might help me to hold
Making a Lamp from a Vintage Tripod
Okay, tripod is a stretch I think. I really don’t know what this thing was/is. When I bought it the tag said “towel holder”, so… I dunno, I guess it’s a towel holder? Not much of a space saver… Whatever. It doesn’t really matter what it was or what it wasn’t because now, it’s a lamp. I did this using a lamp kit (affiliate link) I picked up from Home Depot.
Vintage Window Art
I love, love, love vintage windows. Especially the kind that don’t have dividing panes, like this one: I picked up this little beauty on a birthday trip to Scott’s Antique Market last month. It’s an 1870’s bowed glass window, so it’s got this amazing arch to it. I also love the idea of vintage, hand painted window advertisements and this quick and easy project is a perfect marriage of the
Mid-Century Modern Rast Hack
Ugh. A Rast hack. Like the internet needs one more… It doesn’t… but we needed night stands. I was looking for something with a mid-century modern vibe but also a good amount of storage. Yeah, that’s super hard to find. After months of searching garage sales, thrift stores and craigslist, I gave up and decided to buy a pair of Rasts from Ikea. In June. Yes, these have been sitting
Handmade Halloween: DIY Costume Inspiration
Babes! Halloween is almost here! It’s that amazing time of year when pouring PSL’s down your throat, gorging yourself on candy and dressing like a total slut is completely acceptable. Minus that last part. I could go on a rant about slutty costumes forever. Yeah, I did it once a decade ago, but I was an idiot. Flex your brain muscle and put a little more creativity into your costume
Chair Makeover and a Giveaway!!
So far, living in Georgia has been super dreamy. Two days from now will not only be my birthday (which means my semi-annual trip for highlights – my hair looks like Karl’s from Workaholics) but will also be the one year anniversary of moving into our Georgia home. There are so many fun things to do around here, the fall weather is gorgeous and there’s definitely not a shortage of
Table Into Bench & A Rast Hack
Did you see the Dwell with Dignity Apartment Reveal?! Yeah, still talking about that. I have a couple of quick projects to share that went on in the master bedroom. Neither of them are new to the hardcore DIY’er or pinner out there, so I’m gonna spare you a full tutorial and just smash two things into one. They’re both super easy projects. Here we go. The nightstands are the
Shart Stories – Episode 1
I’m surprised every time I meet someone who has never heard the word shart. Explaining it is almost always awkward, which is awesome because I love awkward. I usually say something like “it’s gas with mass” or I whisper “it’s a little poo accident when tooting” and sometimes I just yell loudly, “ya know, it’s when you fart but accidentally sh!t yourself”. So, imagine my surprise when I explained “sharting”
Flea Market Swap #SwapItLikeItsHot
It’s Flea Market Swap day! Several fabulous DIY bloggers teamed up to swap flea market finds and challenge each other to reinvent forgotten objects. We hit flea markets and thrift stores to pick out items under $10-$15 bucks to ship to another blogger to work their magic. I got my goods from Danielle at 2 Little Superheroes. She sent two woven, flat baskets and a little knobby vase. I’m a lazy
Updating an Old Bookshelf – Paint, Paper & Mod Podge
I recently finished a project with several incredible people to complete a stunning makeover for a deserving family. If you missed the full makeover reveal and want more info about Dwell with Dignity, you can check it out here. One of those projects was this Craigslist bookshelf. The interior designers, Lathem Gordon and Cate Dunning of GordonDunning Interior Design, gave me the paint as well as the wallpaper they wanted to dress
Dwell with Dignity Apartment Reveal
Hey y’all. I’ve been unplugged for a couple of weeks working on a giant project and it’s finally done! (and so, so good!) You might have seen a post a while back for Dwell with Dignity where I was talking about our September install. I think I just copied and pasted text from their website about who they are and what they do, but, let me break it down a little

DIY Graphic Painted Pillow
If you’re having trouble finding the perfect throw pillow to match a particular room in your home, this graphic painted pillow is a quick and easy solution. I made this one to using leftover paint from the dresser I redid a while back. First, measure your pillow insert and cut two squares of fabric one inch larger than your pillow insert. I use the 20″ x 20″ pillow inserts from
DIY Shower Curtain With Grommets
I’ve been having problems in the bathroom. No, this isn’t a set up for a poop joke. I’ve been having a shower curtain issue since we moved in. If you know me, or if you saw my sitting room makeover, you know that I like floor to ceiling curtains. This includes shower curtains. In our last home in Texas, I bought a regular shower curtain and added a foot or

Dwell with Dignity – September Install
The last week has been so insane over here in ShartLand. I took a quick trip to Nashville to help a good friend get settled into his new home, ate some awesome barbeque (shout out to Martin’s in Nashville, I wanna be on you!), got a flat tire, got some new custom orders for pillows and graphic design and went to a Dwell with Dignity meeting. I think the busy season

Ten Fonts Free for Commercial Use
I love fonts. I might have a binder full of font specimen print outs organized into categories. I. Love. Fonts. I’m not a “professional” graphic designer – although someone told me recently that, even if you don’t have a degree in it, if you get paid for it, then you are a professional. I’ve done some wedding water bottle labels and other random things here and there so… whatever, I’ll
DIY Graphic Painted Pillow
Hey kids! I’m over at The Crafting Chicks today sharing how to make this graphic painted pillow. A super cheap and easy way to customize your home decor using your favorite color. Check it out!
Sitting Room Makeover
Our house is the very opposite of an open floor plan. We have one of those random rooms that you can’t really call a living room, but you can’t really call it a den. We call it a sitting room, unless we are drinking whiskey in it, then we call it the parlor (in a really bad English Aristocrat accent). Here’s the listing pic of the room: Those curtains make
Adding A Dust Cover to Upholstery Projects
A dust cover is that black fabric that’s generally under a store bought chair that helps to conceal springs and chair guts. At nine bucks for five yards, it’s super cheap and pretty easy to add to your DIY upholstery projects. If you’ve done a chair makeover for your own home and are too lazy to add the dust cover, I can’t blame ya. No one is gonna know but you.
Sewing a Simple Summer Tote
* This post originally appeared on The Crafting Chicks website on June 16th, 2014 as a contributor post * Summer is here! Time to throw all your junk in a tote bag and hit the beach! If you’re not a beach person (do those exist?), this tote is perfect for the grocery store and can also transition from your basic nautical, summery look to a simple patriotic look for those big
Furniture Refurb: Adding Legs to a Dresser
A few months ago I went down to the Washington-Wilkes area of Georgia for their Tour of Homes (so awesome, btw), and of course I had to stop into a few shops while I was there. I spotted this little dresser and I couldn’t resist the hardware… or the $30 price tag. I didn’t even haggle, I also didn’t even think about the fact that I had a dog and
Vintage Guest Bedroom Makeover
Since moving into the Georgia home, the guest bedrooms have been a little neglected. I’ve finally finished another one, and this bedroom makeoever is my favorite. For real this time. Here’s the room before moving in: We had the carpet and fan replaced, the wall painted in Behr’s Sculptors Clay and the trim/closet/doors painted in a bright white and removed the curtains and hardware. Then we moved our junk in:
Furniture Refurb: Reupholstered Cesca Style Chair
I don’t think I’ve ever reupholstered the same kind of chair twice (except for these). I like to mix it up and challenge myself and doing the same thing over and over tends to bore me. Which is why I quit washing my hair and shaving my legs. Just kidding. Kinda… When I saw this little cantilevered babe at the thrift store, I knew I wanted to try to give it new
Swap It Like It’s Hot
This week I teamed up with 9 other fabulous DIY bloggers to swap flea market finds and challenge each other to reinvent forgotten objects. We were each assigned a material (wood, metal, ceramic, glass, fabric) and then hit flea markets and thrift stores to pick out items under $10-$15 bucks to ship to another blogger to work their magic. I got my goods from Christina at Homemade Ocean and I have
Simple Summer Tote for The Crafting Chicks
Hey y’all! A few months ago I filled out an app to become a contributor for The Crafting Chicks, submitted it and didn’t think about it again. I thought for sure nothing would come of it and I was simply hoping to get the sharty name out there. Well, they picked me along with 8 other fabulous ladies to be contributors for their huge and amazing blog! I am so
Kitchen Reno: Before and After
I’ve posted briefly about our kitchen reno before, but, honestly, it was a crappy post with crappy pictures. Hopefully I can redeem myself here…. We hired a contractor to do this work for us, since we were so burned out from our previous home reno in Texas. Sometimes I wish we had stuck it out and done this on our own, but, guys I was tired. And living in a hotel
Double Welt Piping Tips & Tricks
*This is a sponsored post written by Hearts & Sharts on behalf of the Online Fabric Store in exchange for free product. All creations, opinions and juvenile poop humor are my own.* Last week I made over a pair of chairs and went over some of the deets of the reupholstery earlier this week. While the upholstery part of it was pretty simple, the double welt piping was not so simple. Like I
Upholstery Tips from a DIY’er
*This is a sponsored post written by Hearts & Sharts on behalf of the Online Fabric Store in exchange for free product. All creations, opinions and juvenile poop humor are my own.* I’ve reupholstered several chairs in my lifetime and have learned a lot about what to do and what not to do. I have never taken any classes on this stuff, I am just pretty confident that if I
Chair Makeover with Premier Prints
*This is a sponsored post written by Hearts & Sharts on behalf of the Online Fabric Store in exchange for free product. All creations, opinions and juvenile poop humor are my own.* When we were looking for homes in Georgia, one of our (my) requirements for a new home was a workshop/craft space. I mentioned to our amazing real estate agent that I enjoyed re-doing furniture. When she said she

All creations, opinions and juvenile poop humor are my own.* ***UPDATE 09/22/2015 – I no longer use this sprayer and do not recommend it for those who are looking to paint furniture on a regular basis. The guessing game of thinning the paint is such a pain. Yes, you can get
Finding God- A Personal Story
This is a DIY blog. I’m really aiming to keep it that way, but this week I added something personal in the “About” section of the blog and wanted to share it with you. With everyone. Read the story here.
DIY Large Scale Art on a Small Budget
I am currently working on one of our guest rooms that has a giant wall in need of some large scale art. Giant art usually equates to a giant hole in your wallet, but I’ve found a crazy-inexpensive alternative. Foamular! This post features special guest Howard the Hound. Last week, I finished up my Ombre Hombre and needed another piece of art to go on the adjacent wall. I recently purchased
Painting Ombre
Hola. ¿Como esta frijole? ¿Le gusta reir? I love to laugh and I love to make things that make me laugh. Whenever I am in need of some DIY wall decor, I almost always pick something funny and I especially love puns. Now, I don’t really consider myself trendy, and I’m okay with that. So, I have no idea if this ombre trend is over or not, but this makes me
Thrift Score Thursday
Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike! You know what day it is?! It’s #ThriftScoreThursday ! My thrifty friends Megan from Rental Revival, Brynne from The Gathered Home and Trisha from Black and White Obsession have invited me to guest host with them this week and I am so excited! My favorite part of this day is scrolling through all of the drool-worthy, I-wish-I-found-it-first, mid-century modern finds you guys have come across.
DIY Anatomical Prints
If you are in the market for some cheap, easy and unique wall art, these are the best – and the possibilities are virtually endless. If you’ve never heard of the “public domain”, Imma ’bout to rock yo’ world. Images in the public domain are images whose rights have expired, given up or do not apply. Basically, works in the public domain are public property, which means you can use
Pom Pom Pillow
I’ve been going pillow crazy for the past couple of weeks. I recently made this little guy and it was so simple! She’s not that comfy, but dang, she’s cute! A while back, when I redid my Mom’s hope chest , I found an ancient looking round table cloth inside. The table cloth was a scrapper, but the pom pom trim was screaming at me to be used somewhere… on something.
Pillow Shams with Flange
I have a problem. I make things up in my head that I decide I need and then go out shopping for it and then get super frustrated that I can’t find it. That’s a sign of a creative genius. Just kidding, I made that up, too. So, pillow shams, easy enough to find, but, they aren’t always exactly what I’m looking for, so I decided to make some. I wanted
Kitchen Chairs: Trash to Fash
My friend Bob is the sweetest. And he knows I love a good chair makeover. He gives me his trash. Like these orange little ogres. He brought these over when we lived in Texas and I didn’t have room for them in the house, so they hung out in the backyard for about a month until we moved to Warm-lanta. I knew I wanted to redo them but didn’t know
Lampshade Makeover That Doesn’t Look Like Crap
There are approximately 7 billion lampshade makeovers online. So why am I posting this? Because 80% of them look like they were done by an unsupervised toddler. The outsides look fine, but it’s the insides that drive me nuts. You want to redo a lampshade, so you Google it or search it on Pinterest, you find one you like and when you get to the end of the tutorial, one
Sculpey Soap Dish
*This is a sponsored post written by Hearts & Sharts on behalf of Sculpey in exchange for free product. All creations, opinions and juvenile poop humor are my own. I only promote brands and products that I think are totally awesome and this is one of ’em.* Hi. Did you see the Finger Wall Hook I posted yesterday? It’s a little creepy. I questioned whether or not it was “over
Wooden Crate Footstool
I drug the Hubs out to Woodstock Market last weekend so we could grab a couple things I had spotted the weekend before at the Junk Drunk Jones booth only to find they had moved out. Boo! We asked an employee up front what the deal was and they said they had left to go to the Round Top Antique Market in Texas. This was the second time in the last two weeks I had heard
Hanging Test Tube Wall Planter
I’ve said this before: I keep everything. Everything. You never know when the day will come when you can use something that’s been chillin’ in your stash of craft goods for a couple months. Or, in this case, twenty years. Yeah, my mom bought this test tube spice rack back when I was in 8th grade. I remember exactly where we lived when she had it in the kitchen. I
Our First Home Reno
The Hubs and I bought our first house, a foreclosure, on April 15, 2011 with the help of our good friend and Realtor Scott Neal . We sold the home in September of 2013 to make the big move to Georgia. It was a TON of work, but it was a labor of love. Looking back, I can’t even believe we did all that… Check it out the before and afters…. The
Furniture Refurb: 1970’s Salon Shampoo Chair
I am so excited about this project! I have had this salon chair for almost a year and have really been wanting to redo it to use as an outdoor piece, but wasn’t able to find the perfect fabric. When I heard about Creating with the Stars, a contest put on by East Coast Creative, my mind began racing and after consulting with my buddy Trisha at Black and White
Furniture Refurb: Five Dollar Chairs
I picked up these chairs in the middle of nowhere at a garage sale. I was bent over one of them, doing some inspecting, when I heard a woman yell “five bucks for both!”. I don’t think I even looked up, I just threw a fiver on the ground, grabbed a chair and ran for the car while Hubs was still standing there wondering if she was serious. “No takebacks!
Craft Room Reveal
The craft room is finally done! Here’s a quick reminder of what it looked like when we first bought the house: Another angle: We took down the wire shelving, pulled up the carpet, painted over the blue wall and finished off the wall under the cabinets. Then I moved all of my junk in … (this is not the “after” shot) Another angle. A mish-mash of all of my crap… Ready?!
Anatomical Heart Pillow Cover
I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day, also not a fan of Valentine’s day crafts. Right now, they are everywhere and I can’t seem to escape it. But, you know what else happens on February 14th?! It’s the anniversary of the day Wayne’s World was released! One of my top five favorite movies of all time. So, what does this have to do with this heart pillow? Well, I made
Ikea Hack: Creating A Standing Workstation
I have two problems: 1. I am the owner of a voluminous caboose; 2. When I sit down at my computer and click a link, it seems like several hours pass in a matter of seconds and then I wonder where my day has gone. If you’ve ever been on Pinterest, I know you know what I am talking about. “What did you do today, babe?” “I clicked all the
Vintage Photo Holders
If you know me personally, or have checked out my about page, you know that I keep everything. Everything. If you wrote me a note in middle school, I probably still have it. I come from a long line of I’m-going-to-keep-this-because-I-might-need-it-one-day kind of people, so, when my Grandmother passed away, my Mom kept all of her stuff. When Grandpa passed away, Mom kept all of his stuff. When my Mom passed
Tula Pink Parisville Chairs
This is one of my most favorite rescues. I bought these chairs for next to nothing. I couldn’t resist the shape (that’s always the story). Upholstery and paint can be easily changed – if you’re at the flea market or dumpster diving, keep that in mind and look at the shape of the piece. These are shaped like awesome, so, done deal. I had already fallen in love with some
Anthro-Inspired Heart Pillow
I was clickin’ around on Anthropolgie.com the other day and saw something that caused me to become completely enraged. A pillow for $198. Are you kidding me?! Are you friggin’ kidding me?! Two hundo for something that my husband will eventually fart into? No, no thank you. Now, I don’t really like to decorate with hearts. I am not even a fan of Valentine’s Day (hubs thinks “it’s on the
Easy Envelope Back Pillow Cover
There are a number of ways to make a pillow cover, this is by far the easiest. Four stitch lines on one piece of fabric, some folding, ironing and boom. So simple. Shout out to my tiny 10 year old friend who just got her first sewing machine. You rock, Kenna! The possibilities are endless, babe! If you have a pillow form that needs a cover, here’s the formula: Add
Create Your Own Chalkboard Art Like a Pro
Have some sort of chalkboard surface in your home? Does it look terrible because your handwriting looks like chicken scratch? You can easily make it look awesome with some “professional” hand drawn typography. My chalkboard is in my kitchen so I’ve decided on a friendly reminder in a chalk font. First thing’s first: decide on your text. You can find some great chalkboard fonts through Pinterest or Google. I
Furniture Refurb: Painting Over Laminate
I have heard so many horror stories about painting over laminate. Despite all of my fears, I had to try it. This retro table matched my hanging Luby’s light so well that I couldn’t pass it up. It was a Craigslist score! Got it from a place that sells seat belt extenders. Weird. This thing was dated and totally the wrong color… and also a little gross looking.
Another Home Reno: Before and After
Our latest home reno. From dirty retro dump to clean retro funk. The new hanging light is a vintage piece from a Luby’s Cafeteria somewhere. Here it is before the paint job. Check out that tile! All those crevices. All those germ-hideouts. Someone else’s old toast crumbs… *shudder* My husband loved the wood paneling. Good sign that it needs to go. Wink. Used the Dawn dish soap trick on this
Furniture Refurb: The Jefferson’s Chair
Okay, for real, though, THIS chair might be my favorite chair. I bought this from someone on Facebook on one of those Buy/Sell/Trade pages for about $40 bucks. I couldn’t resist this shape. I just love it. But dang, that decades-old-stank-velvet was gross. Every time I redo a chair, I can’t help but think of all the farts that have been absorbed by them in the past. Ugh. This one
Cheap and Easy DIY Wall Art: Vintage China Revival
I get TONS of compliments on my “plate wall”. They are super easy to make and lots of fun, especially if you think you are super funny, which I do. Because I am. No joke. Here’s the plate wall in the old house: Love it? Wanna create your own? It’s super easy and you don’t even need a drop of artistic talent. Here we go: Get a plate. I have
How to Remove Smoke Stains from a Brick Fireplace Surround
Removing smoke stains from your fireplace surround is super easy. Well, except for the whole “elbow grease” thing. Grab a gallon bucket and fill it with warm water. Drop a couple drops of Dawn dish soap in the water. The water should be soapy but not sudsy. Lay some towels and/or protective covering on/around your mantel. In this case, the carpet was hideous, so, who cares?! Dunk your scrub brush
Furniture Refurb: 1950’s Swivel Chair with Tula Pink’s Raindrops
I picked up this chair at Alston’s Antique’s in G-Town. A friend “helped” me sand blast it (he totally did it for me). I removed/trashed the upholstery, painted it with Rustoleum’s Painter’s Touch 2x Satin in Lemongrass and sewed/recovered it with some Tula Pink laminated cotton fabric. One of my absolute favorite chairs ever. Yeah, I say that a lot. But I mean it every time. I sold this at a trade days event. The woman
Cheap and Easy DIY Wall Art: Handmade Herringbone
I had this old vintage mirror that my mom used as her vanity when she was in high school. In the old house, it hung at the end of the hallway so that you can see the boogey man in the mirror before he gets you. It broke in the move to Georgia and the remains sat in the garage for a month waiting to be taken to the curb.
Furniture Refurb: Hanging Luby’s Lights
Omg. I fell in love with these the second I saw them at McKinney Trade Days. I had to have them, even though we had just finished remodeling our home in Texas, I just KNEW I need some hanging lights that once hung in a Luby’s Cafeteria. I mean, right? You woulda bought them, too… Look at that retro charm! They’re made of ceramic and pretty heavy. I got ’em home, let
