This week I teamed up with 9 other fabulous DIY bloggers to swap flea market finds and challenge each other to reinvent forgotten objects. We were each assigned a material (wood, metal, ceramic, glass, fabric) and then hit flea markets and thrift stores to pick out items under $10-$15 bucks to ship to another blogger to work their magic.
I got my goods from Christina at Homemade Ocean and I have to admit, I didn’t really work much magic.
Christina’s category was metal so she sent over an 8×10 frame with a metal insert that had been painted with chalkboard paint. The alphabet magnet letters had already been spray painted gold, but, since one of our guest rooms has some gold and white in it, I just went with the same color scheme. I went over the frame with high gloss white and then went over the letters with gold and hot glued them to the top of the frame. Then added a note for next lucky house guest who spends the night in here.
Yeah, that’s a shart wipe.
So, I’ll admit this wasn’t the most magical makeover. I have been stressing over this for a month now thinking of other things I could do with these supplies but just couldn’t get past the most obvious. I actually had a pretty clever idea that resulted in a craft fail. I took the letters D, A, L, and I and held them upside down with pliers and melted them with a heat gun to give them a melty, surreal look. Or, at least that was the intention. Then I was going to draw a llama on the chalkboard with a Salvador Dali-esque mustache. Get it?! Dali Llama. Well, I over melted. Fail.
Oh well. Now we can leave little notes for our guests.
And the gold letters match the gold bed and gold throw pillow in this guest room.
Yeah, we aren’t really out of toilet paper. It’s just a sneaky way of saving money on TP.
I sent my goods to Jen at The Chronicles of Home. I was supposed to send glass, I think, but I totally cheated and sent her some random wood thing. I really have no idea what it was, maybe a table runner? I can’t wait to see what she did with it.
Be sure and check out all the other bloggers gettin’ their swap on!

You caught my interest with the word “shart”. As I was checking out your notes board in the guest room I realized we have the same taste in fabric. I used the same green/white print fabric for couch pillows. I guess great minds think alike.
Hhahah, if sharting doesn’t catch your attention, then I think there’s something wrong! Hhahah! Great minds club, right here!
you better find a way to incorporate that dali llama somewhere though.
🙂
I think you made the best choice! Sometimes it is the idea staring you in the face that works. Very cute and I will stay at your house anytime….although I would need to stop at the store on my way there I guess 🙂
Hahaha! 🙂
That note!!! Hahahaha
The only other thing I could think of was to put the WiFi password on there… but I don’t know it. 🙂
Totally real, I will use that shart wipe when I stay in that guest room. 😉
Hahahah! I’ll show you our secret TP hiding place.
That shows she really care. She will let you use the real TP.
Hi Dena,
I actually really love those little items and that was a perfect us for them. I would have probably tried to make a sign, and that’s just kind of boring 🙂
This is really cute and functional!
Thanks, Jessica! Love your tray! And that strawberry water (?) looks delish!
