Are you ready for a vintage guest room makeover?!
So, I wasn’t going to share this, because it’s really not a makeover, but then I went back and looked at the before images and thought, “honkin’ crap, Dena, what were you thinking that first time around?!” So I thought I’d bring it to the blog to 1) have my “what the funk” moment in public so we can laugh and, 2) so I’ll have a way to explain what happened to the other bedroom. Huh? Lemme explain.
I’ve already given this room a makeover or two. When we moved in it looked like this:
Then we moved our stuff in…
… all of it inherited from Mom. I was using watermarks and a point-n-shoot… two things I’m glad are in the past.
And then I gave it a “makeover”.
What the heck is this?
Ugh. The large scale art is now in the craft room, the Ombre Hombre is now abstract art that now hangs in the living room. Goodness, this is awful. The PVC slice headboard got trashed along with the PVC slice “art”, and I sold the bed frame, the pillow covers, the white desk and the (ugh) cinder block night stands.
So, now that everything in the room has been sold or trashed, what does it look like now?
If you’ve been with me for at least a year, all of this furniture will look familiar.
Right. I moved everything out of this bedroom and into this one. So, not really a makeover.
The suitcase night stands I made back when Pinterest was invite only…
The sweetest quilt I own. I love, love this delicate little thing, the fact that it was handmade by a relative is so special to me.
I hung an old metal table top from my great-grandparents house above my “quilt buffet” to use as a magnet board.
Magnets handmade by Mom.
More inherited goods…
…and an o.g. craft project from when I was in high school. Prom and Homecoming flowers got chopped up to decorate a frame for my Mom on a past Mother’s Day. That pic is the only pic of five generations of women in my family. I’m the baby in the pic and the only one still living.
Also still keepin’ it classy by shoving fake flowers in an old candle.
O.G. [insert dueces emoji]
So there it is; this is awful. So embarrassing. Sharpies, cinder blocks and plumbing pipe. What the funk. I guess we just call it growth and move on… I don’t even know what I was doing, I guess just a makeover on a college budget? And there’s nothing wrong with that, but I’ve been outta college for longer than I care to admit.
But now it’s this:
and I’m loving it so much more. Also loving that now my OCD won’t spin out of control by thinking about trying to explain the other bedroom out of chronological order.
If you go back and look at that other bedroom post, I casually mentioned that I stuffed a dresser in the closet since it didn’t fit in the room. Getting it in there was not so casual of a thing. Who does this?!
Both of these dressers have sentimental value… but this is a problem. The top one was Mom’s – I robbed the hardware and sold the dresser naked in a garage sale and the other one is living in this bedroom (out of the closet). So glad I had that garage sale. Three cheers for letting go.
Coming up in the next week or so: Deets on the faux brass finish that I did for a dresser here as well as pics of what the original vintage guest bedroom looks like.
I am in love wit the night end table. Ive been wanting a stand made out of old trunks like that but can’t find or don’t know where to look. any suggestions on where to find trunks like that and also table legs like the green ones you have? Thank you so much for your time and creative mind. You’ve done a beautiful job and its really inspiring. thank you again!!
Hey Ashley! Thank you! The legs and brackets are actually just from Home Depot. I used some Rustoleum spray paint to paint them green. To find the suitcases, I’d hit up flea markets, thrift stores… but also think grandparents, friends’ grandparents. If you’re in the Atlanta area I have one I’ll sell ya for ten bucks. 🙂
Love the colors!!! What paint color did you use Miss Dena?
Thank you, Janice! The paint color on the walls is called Sculptor’s Clay by Behr. 🙂
hooo wheeeee dena i had to grab my sunglasses lol. that pinwheel quilt is to die for , and so is that bed xx
Hahahaha! Thanks, Monkey!!!
Ha! I love this post. I love that you’re not afraid to admit and share you design fails of the past. I know I have my fair share of those! My pictures are so horrific I can barely look at them! I love the way that the room turned out!
I just can’t claim some of the old work on the blog, it’s really just bad. Ha! Thanks, Jess!
Such a sweet makeover, I love the idea of using the enamel table top a magnet board. May have to steal that one, hmm just need a table top 😛
Thank you, Maggie!
Beautiful makeover! You crack me up… “what the heck is this??” Love where you took the room!! – Rachael
Hahaha, thank you, Rachael! But, really, that was awful.
Wow this is incredible! Makes me want to buy a new house and start decorating all over again!
Thanks, Chan!
